Nitrous Oxide Analgesia
Nitrous oxide is a gas, commonly referred to as ‘happy gas’ or ‘laughing gas’.
It is a colorless gas which decreases pain sensitivity and gives the patient a pleasant level of sedation. Every treatment room in our facility is equipped with Nitrous oxide delivery allowing us to give the exact amount of nitrous oxide needed to relax a patient, and to continue giving it in incremental doses. The machine contains a pin-index and diameter-index safety system to ensure proper attachment and flow of gases to the patient.
After an appropriate dose of nitrous oxide has been administered, we may then comfortably give the anesthetic injection (if needed) and proceed with the dental treatment. Once treatment is completed, the patient is given pure oxygen to breathe for about five minutes, and all of the effects of the sedation are reversed.
As a precaution, patients should not eat anything for about two hours prior to the use of the gas. Unlike IV sedation or general anesthesia, the patient can almost always leave the office by themselves, without an escort.
